Michał Kwiatkowski's Cycling Journey
Starting Out in Cycling
Michał was a very talented young cyclist. He won two European junior championships. He won the road race in 2007 and the individual time trial in 2008. In 2009, he became the national road champion for riders under 23. He also won a stage in a race called Okolo Slovenska. He became a professional cyclist in 2010. In 2011, he joined Team RadioShack and finished third in a few races.
Racing with Omega Pharma–Quick Step (2012–2015)
First Years and Big Races
Michał joined Omega Pharma–Quick-Step in 2012. He quickly showed how good he was. He won a short opening race called a prologue in the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen. He also finished second overall in his home race, the Tour de Pologne.
Strong Performances in 2013
Michał started 2013 very well. He finished second overall in the Volta ao Algarve. Then, he came in fourth overall in Tirreno–Adriatico. He also won the 'young rider' award there. He was one of the best climbers in the race. He then did well in several 'classic' races. He finished fourth in the Amstel Gold Race. In June, he won the Polish National Road Race Championships for the first time.
His great form meant he was chosen for the Tour de France. He wore the white jersey for the best young rider for the first week. He finished third and fourth in early stages. He even got on the podium in a tough mountain stage. He finished 11th overall in his first Tour de France.
Becoming a World Champion in 2014
In 2014, Michał won the Italian race Strade Bianche. He attacked with another rider, Peter Sagan, and then rode alone to win. He also finished third in two other big races, Liège–Bastogne–Liège and La Flèche Wallonne.
In September, he made history. He became the first Polish cyclist to win the UCI Road Race World Championships. Michał attacked with about 7 kilometers left. He rode downhill very fast and kept his lead. He crossed the finish line first, winning the special rainbow jersey.
2015 Season Highlights
As the world champion, Michał started 2015 a bit more relaxed. He used races like the Volta ao Algarve to get ready. He finished second overall in both of these races. In April, he won the famous Amstel Gold Race. He outsprinted other riders to win this Dutch classic.
Joining Team Sky / Team Ineos (2016–Present)

Big Wins in 2017
On March 4, 2017, Michał won the Strade Bianche again. He attacked with 15 kilometers to go and rode alone to victory. This made him one of only two riders to win this race more than once. Later that month, he won Milan–San Remo. This was his first win in one of cycling's 'Monuments'. He beat world champion Peter Sagan and Julian Alaphilippe in a close sprint.
He was chosen for the Tour de France team. He helped his team leader, Chris Froome, a lot. He was called a "super-domestique" because he helped Froome so much. On July 29, he won Clásica de San Sebastián. He outsprinted four other riders to win.

He took the lead from his teammate Geraint Thomas and held on to win the race. In July, he again helped his team at the 2018 Tour de France. He helped Geraint Thomas win the race. A week later, he won his home race, the Tour de Pologne. He won stage 4 and kept his lead to win the whole race.
