The 2023 Tour de France was a super exciting bicycle race! It was the 110th time this famous event happened. The race started in Bilbao, Spain, on July 1st. It finished in Paris, France, on July 23rd, on the famous Champs-Élysées street.

The champion from the year before, Jonas Vingegaard from Team Jumbo-Visma, won the main race again. This was his second win in a row! Tadej Pogačar from UAE Team Emirates, who had won twice before, came in second place. His teammate, Adam Yates, finished third.

How the Race Unfolded

The race began in Bilbao, a city in the Basque Country region of Spain. Soon after, the riders moved into France. For the first two weeks, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar were very close. They were often only about 10 seconds apart!

The most important parts of the race were two stages. First, there was a special race against the clock called an individual time trial on Stage 16. Vingegaard was much faster, beating Pogačar by 1 minute and 38 seconds. Then, in the next stage, which went through the tough Alps mountains, Vingegaard pulled even further ahead. He ended up with a lead of more than seven minutes!

Vingegaard's big win meant he had won the Tour de France twice, just like his rival Pogačar. His winning gap of 7 minutes and 29 seconds was the biggest difference between first and second place since 2014.

Other Big Winners

Besides the overall winner, there are other important awards in the Tour de France:

  • The points classification was won by Jasper Philipsen from Alpecin-Deceuninck. This was his first time winning this award.
  • The mountains classification was won by Giulio Ciccone from Trek-Segafredo. He was the first Italian rider to win this since 1992!
  • The young rider classification is for the best rider under a certain age. Tadej Pogačar won this for the fourth year in a row!
  • The team classification was won by Jumbo-Visma, showing they were the strongest team overall.
  • Victor Campenaerts from Lotto-Dstny was chosen as the most combative rider. This award goes to the rider who shows the most fighting spirit.

Right after the men's race finished, the second ever Tour de France Femmes (women's Tour de France) began. Its first stage was on the same day the men's Tour ended.
