Early Life and Learning
Michael Ashton grew up in Hamilton, New Zealand. When he was just nine years old, he found his mom's makeup kit. He loved playing with the eyeshadows and hot rollers. He even convinced his grandmother to let him do her makeup when she performed with his uncle, Sir Howard Morrison.
Michael went to different schools, including Katikati Primary and Bethlehem College. He taught himself how to do makeup by reading a book called 'Making Faces' by Kevyn Aucoin. Later, he studied hairdressing at Servilles Academy. He worked in a top salon in Auckland before moving to New York. There, he worked with the MAC Cosmetics team and helped with fashion shows in Europe.
Michael's Career Journey
Michael started working with famous people when music groups like Girls Aloud and Jamelia visited New Zealand. He then moved to London in 2006. He helped other makeup artists at fashion shows in the UK and Europe. Through a friend, he got to work with stars like Bianca Jagger and Elle McPherson. This made him focus on doing makeup for red carpet events.
In 2007, Michael met the singer Adele through a friend. This was just before her first album, 19, came out. Michael became Adele's personal makeup artist and worked with her for 12 years.
