Michael Biddulph, 1st Baron Biddulph (born February 17, 1834 – died April 6, 1923) was an important British banker and politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for many years. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the House of Commons, which is part of the UK government. He was also a Justice of the Peace (JP), meaning he helped keep law and order, and a Deputy Lieutenant (DL) for his county.
Early Life and Family
Michael Biddulph was born into a well-known family. His father was Robert Biddulph, who was also an MP. His mother was Elizabeth Palmer. Michael was the oldest son.
He had several brothers who also achieved success. One brother, Sir Robert Biddulph, became a General in the Army. Another brother, Colonel John Biddulph, served in India. Michael also had a brother named George Tournay Biddulph, who worked in the family's banking business.
Michael Biddulph received his education at Harrow School, a famous school in England.
Political and Banking Career
Michael Biddulph was a partner in a banking company in London called Cocks, Biddulph and Co. This meant he helped run the bank.
In 1865, he was elected to the House of Commons to represent the area of Herefordshire. He held this position until 1885. After that, he represented the area of Ross from 1886 to 1900.
Initially, Michael Biddulph was part of the Liberal Party. However, he disagreed with the leader, William Ewart Gladstone, about a big issue called Irish Home Rule. This was a debate about whether Ireland should have its own government. Because of this disagreement, Biddulph joined a new group called the Liberal Unionists after 1886.
Besides his work as an MP, Biddulph also served as a Justice of the Peace for Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant of Herefordshire. In 1903, he was given the title of Baron Biddulph, which made him a member of the peerage.
Family Life
Michael Biddulph was married twice. His first marriage was to Adelaide Georgiana Peel in 1864. She was the daughter of General Jonathan Peel. Michael and Adelaide had two sons and three daughters:
- John Michael Gordon, 2nd Baron Biddulph (1869–1949): He later became the 2nd Baron Biddulph.
- Claud William Biddulph (1871–1954)
- Adela Margaret Mary Biddulph (died young in 1876)
- Edith Mary Biddulph (died 1939)
- Violet Maud Biddulph (died 1960)
Adelaide passed away in 1872.
In 1877, Michael Biddulph married his second wife, Lady Elizabeth Philippa Adeane. She was the widow of Henry John Adeane, who had also been an MP. Lady Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Charles Yorke, 4th Earl of Hardwicke. Michael and Elizabeth did not have any children together.
Lady Elizabeth Biddulph died in 1916. Lord Biddulph passed away in April 1923, at the age of 89. His eldest son, John, inherited his title and became the 2nd Baron Biddulph.
