Michael Darwin Morley (born September 29, 1930 – died October 11, 2020) was an American mathematician. He was a very important person in the field of mathematical logic.
Morley was a professor at Cornell University. He is famous for something called Morley's categoricity theorem. He proved this theorem in his PhD paper in 1962.
Early Life and School
Michael Morley was born in Youngstown, Ohio. This happened on September 29, 1930.
He went to the Case Institute of Technology. He earned his first degree in mathematics there in 1951. Later, he got his PhD in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1962. A PhD is a very high degree you can get at a university.
Even though his official advisor was Saunders Mac Lane, he finished his PhD work with Robert Vaught. This work was done at the University of California, Berkeley. His main paper for his PhD was called Categoricity in Power.
Morley's Career
After finishing school, Morley became a professor. He worked at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. This was from 1963 to 1967.
In 1967, he moved to Cornell University. He started as an associate professor. By 1970, he became a full professor. He taught and did research there until 2003. That year, he became a professor emeritus. This means he retired but still kept his title.
Morley also led a group called the Association for Symbolic Logic. He was their president from 1986 to 1989. This group studies mathematical logic.
Important Work and Awards
Michael Morley received a big award in 2003. It was the Leroy P. Steele Prize. This prize is given for important research in mathematics. The American Mathematical Society gave him this award.
He got the award for his paper "Categoricity in Power." This paper was based on his PhD work from 1962. In this paper, he introduced new ideas like Morley rank. He also proved his famous Morley's categoricity theorem. This theorem is a key idea in model theory, which is a part of mathematical logic.
Personal Life
Michael Morley passed away on October 11, 2020. He died in Sayre, Pennsylvania.
