Michael Dauncey's Military Journey
Michael Donald Keen Dauncey was born in Coventry, England, on May 11, 1920. He was the only son of Thomas Gough Dauncey and Alice Keen. He went to school at King Edward's School, Birmingham.
A Hero in Operation Market Garden
On September 17, 1944, Michael Dauncey took part in Operation Market Garden. This was a very important mission during World War II. He flew a special type of aircraft called a Horsa glider into a place called Arnhem.
The fighting lasted for several days. During this time, Michael was hurt and injured his eyes. Even though he lost sight in one eye, he kept fighting bravely. Sadly, he was captured by the enemy.
A Daring Escape
While being held, Michael Dauncey was in a hospital in the Netherlands. He managed to escape with another officer. They used a rope made from knotted bedsheets! After their escape, he hid for four months. He stayed in a safe place called the Utrecht English Parsonage. For his incredible bravery during this battle, he was given the Distinguished Service Order award.
Life After the War
After the war, Michael Dauncey continued his career in the army. He held several important positions. In 1978, he became the Colonel of the Cheshire Regiment. This was a big honor.
After retiring from the army, he lived in Uley, England, with his wife, Marjorie. He passed away on August 23, 2017, at the age of 97.
