Professor Sir Michael Oliver McBride is a top doctor who works for the government in Northern Ireland. He has been the Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland since September 2006. This means he is the main medical advisor to the government and helps make important decisions about public health.

Early Life and Education
Michael McBride grew up in North Belfast and went to St. Malachy's College. After school, he studied medicine at Queen's University Belfast. He graduated in 1986 with a special medical degree, showing he was excellent in both medicine and surgery.
In 1991, he received a special research award. This allowed him to study at St Mary's Hospital Medical School and Imperial College London. During this time, he researched new ways to treat serious health challenges.
A Career in Public Health
From 1994 to 2006, Sir Michael worked as a specialist doctor at the Royal Group Hospitals Trust. He helped people with specific health conditions. In 2002, he became the medical director of these hospitals, which meant he was in charge of medical services.
In September 2006, the Department of Health chose him to be Northern Ireland's Chief Medical Officer. This is a very important job, as he advises the government on all health matters.
He also took on extra roles when needed. Between March and August 2009, he temporarily led the entire health and social care system in Northern Ireland. Later, from November 2014 to February 2017, he also led a major health organization in Belfast, the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, while still being the Chief Medical Officer.
Leading During Challenges
As Chief Medical Officer, Sir Michael has faced many big health challenges. One of the most significant was the COVID-19 pandemic. He played a key role in guiding Northern Ireland through this difficult time, helping to protect people's health.
Special Honours
In 2021, Sir Michael McBride received a special honour from the Queen. He was knighted in the 2021 Birthday Honours for his great work in public health in Northern Ireland. This means he can now use the title "Sir" before his name.
Also in 2021, Queen's University Belfast gave him an honorary Professorship. This special title recognized his important contributions to public health.
