Michael Anthony Moriarty is a retired Irish judge. He was born on August 10, 1946. He worked as a judge for many years in Ireland. He served as a judge in the High Court from 1996 to 2018. Before that, he was a judge in the Circuit Court from 1987 to 1996.

Early Life and Education

Michael Moriarty was born in Belfast. His parents were James and Nora Moriarty. In 1960, he moved to Dublin.

He went to school at Blackrock College. He also studied at University College Dublin and King's Inns. In 1968, he became a lawyer in Ireland. He became a Senior Counsel in 1982. This means he was a very experienced lawyer. He mostly worked on criminal law cases.

In 1986, he became the leader of the Employment Appeals Tribunal. This group helped solve problems between workers and their employers.

Judicial Career

Michael Moriarty became a judge in the Circuit Court in 1987. This court handles many different types of cases. Later, in March 1996, he became a judge in the High Court. This court deals with more serious and important cases.

He also led a special group called the Lord Mayor's Commission on Crime. This group looked at ways to reduce crime.

The Moriarty Tribunal

Mr. Moriarty is most famous for leading the Moriarty Tribunal. He was the chairperson of this special investigation from 1997 to 2010. A tribunal is like a big public inquiry. It looks into important matters.

This tribunal investigated the financial dealings of two important people. They were Charles Haughey, a former leader of Ireland (called the Taoiseach), and Michael Lowry, a former government minister.

The first report from the tribunal came out in 2006. It looked into how Mr. Haughey handled money. The second report was released in 2011. It looked into how a mobile phone license was given out. It found that Mr. Lowry had shared helpful information with a businessman named Denis O'Brien.

Michael Moriarty retired in April 2018. He had been a judge for 31 years.

Personal Life

Michael Moriarty was married to Mary Irvine. They have three children together. Later, he married Doreen Delahunty.
