Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Michael Neander (who was originally named Neumann) was a smart German man born on April 3, 1529. He lived until October 23, 1581. He was a very busy person who worked as a teacher, a mathematician (someone who studies numbers and shapes), a medical academic (meaning he studied and taught medicine), and an astronomer (someone who studies stars and planets).

Early Life and Learning

Michael Neander was born in a place called Joachimsthal, which was in Bohemia (a region now part of the Czech Republic). He went to a famous school called the University of Wittenberg. This is where he got his first university degree, a B.A., in 1549. Just one year later, in 1550, he earned an even higher degree, a M.A.. These degrees showed he was very good at his studies.

A Teacher and Professor

After finishing his education, Michael Neander started teaching. From 1551 to 1561, he taught important subjects like mathematics and astronomy in a city called Jena, in Germany. The school where he taught became a university in 1558, and that's when he became a professor. Being a professor means you are a high-level teacher at a university.

He loved learning and teaching, and he continued to grow in his career. From 1560 until he passed away, he was a professor of medicine at the University of Jena. This shows he was skilled in many different areas, from numbers and stars to human health.

His Lasting Legacy

Michael Neander died in Jena, Germany, in 1581. Even though he lived a long time ago, his name is still remembered. There is a special place on the Moon called the Neander crater, and it was named after him! This is a great way to honor someone who contributed so much to teaching and science.
