Michael Nudelman's Political Journey
Michael Nudelman was born in Kiev, which was then part of the Soviet Union (and is now Ukraine). In 1991, he made aliyah to Israel. Aliyah is a Hebrew word meaning "ascent" or "going up," and it refers to Jews moving to Israel.
Joining the Knesset
In 1996, Michael Nudelman was elected to the 14th Knesset. He represented a party called Yisrael BaAliyah. The Knesset is where laws are made in Israel.
Later, he and another politician, Yuri Stern, left Yisrael BaAliyah. They started their own party called Aliyah. This party later joined with Yisrael Beiteinu.
Serving in More Knessets
As a member of the new group, Michael Nudelman was elected to the 15th Knesset in 1999. He was also elected to the 16th Knesset in 2003. During this time, his party, Yisrael Beiteinu, was part of a larger group called the National Union.
In the 14th Knesset, he led the Science and Technology Committee. He also served as the Deputy Chairman of the 16th Knesset.
Supporting the Disengagement Plan
In 2005, Mr. Nudelman supported the disengagement plan. This plan involved Israel removing its settlements and military presence from the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank.
Towards the end of the 16th Knesset, he left his party. He announced that he was joining Kadima. He finished his term in the Knesset as an independent member.
Final Years in Politics
In the 2006 elections, Michael Nudelman was re-elected to the Knesset. He was on Kadima's list of candidates.
Before the 2009 elections, he left Kadima. He then reformed his old party, Aliyah, and renamed it Yisrael HaMithadeshet. However, his party did not get enough votes to enter the Knesset, and he lost his seat.
