Michael Stephen Palmer (born October 9, 1943 – died October 30, 2013) was an American doctor and a very popular writer. He wrote exciting books called "medical thrillers." These are stories that combine medical mysteries with lots of suspense and action! Many of his books became best-sellers, meaning lots of people bought and read them. His stories were so good that they were translated into 35 different languages. One of his most famous books, Extreme Measures, was even made into a movie in 1996, starring famous actors like Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Michael Stephen Palmer was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on October 9, 1943. His parents were Milton and May Palmer. He grew up with his two younger sisters, Donna and Susan.

His Education and Early Career

Michael went to Wesleyan University and finished in 1964. He studied to become a doctor there. After that, he went to Case Western Reserve University for medical school. He then trained to be an internal medicine doctor at hospitals in Boston.

How He Became a Writer

Michael Palmer once said he never planned to be a writer. He didn't think he was very good at it, even though he loved to read. But in 1978, he read a medical thriller called Coma by Robin Cook. Robin Cook also went to Wesleyan University, just like Michael. Michael thought, "If he can write a book, maybe I can too!"

When he wasn't writing, Michael worked part-time at the Massachusetts Medical Society. His first book was called The Sisterhood.

His Famous Books

Michael Palmer wrote many exciting medical thrillers. His second book, Side Effects (1985), was about testing unapproved medicines. But his most famous book was Extreme Measures (1991). In this story, a young doctor finds out about some secret, bad things happening at a hospital. This book was so popular that it was made into a movie in 1996.
