Mike Thompson's Lacrosse Journey
Mike Thompson joined the Buffalo Bandits on August 18, 2006. He started as a backup goalie, helping out the main goalie, Steve Dietrich. A backup goalie is a player who is ready to step in if the main goalie gets tired or hurt.
Becoming a Starter
During the 2007 NLL season, Steve Dietrich got injured. Mike Thompson stepped up and took over as the starting goalie. A starting goalie plays most of the game. Mike played so well that he became the team's main goalie after that season.
Winning the Championship
In 2008 NLL season, another great goalie, Ken Montour, returned to the Buffalo Bandits. He and Mike Thompson worked together as a goalie team. This means they shared playing time in games. Their teamwork helped the Bandits win their fourth NLL Championship! This big win is called the Champion's Cup. In the 2008 Champion's Cup game, Mike made 39 saves, including one right as the game ended. A save is when the goalie stops the ball from going into the net.
Mike Thompson retired from the NLL after the 2012 NLL season. He did return briefly in 2014 as a backup for two games with the Rochester Knighthawks, but he did not play in those games.
Mike's Career Highlights
Mike Thompson played in 97 games during his NLL career. He was known for being a strong goalie who could stop many shots. His ability to make important saves helped his teams, especially the Buffalo Bandits, win many games and even a championship. He was a key player in the Bandits' 2008 NLL Championship victory.
