Williams was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. In the 1970s, he moved to Montreal, Canada. There, he studied at the Communications Arts School at Loyola, which is now called Concordia University.

Michael Williams was a very important part of MuchMusic when it first started. He was one of the original VJs, helping to launch the channel in 1984. He worked alongside other famous VJs like J. D. Roberts, Erica Ehm, Christopher Ward, and Denise Donlon.
