Michel's Patisserie was a well-known Australian chain of bakeries. They sold yummy treats like cakes, pies, and savouries, along with coffee. It started as a franchise business in 1988.
At its peak, Michel's Patisserie had over 90 stores across Australia. They were in almost every state and territory. The company employed about 4,000 people. Each year, they served millions of cups of coffee and slices of cake. It was once the biggest pastry chain in Australia.
The company was part of a larger group called Retail Food Group (RFG). This group also owns other popular brands like Gloria Jeans Coffee and Donut King.
In February 2025, RFG announced that the remaining Michel's Patisserie stores would close. Some of these stores were changed into Gloria Jeans Coffee or Donut King locations. This brought an end to 45 years of Michel's Patisserie.
The Story of Michel's Patisserie
Michel's Patisserie was started by two people named Noel Carroll and Noel Roberts in 1988. They had a clever idea for their business. They set up a main bakery that made all the products. Then, these fresh products were sent to the different stores every day.
The stores were places where customers could come and buy the delicious items on display. Before launching, they spent two years planning everything. This included how to deliver products, how the stores should look, and how to train their staff.
They tested their ideas in stores in Castlecrag and Newport. After these tests, they officially launched Michel's Patisserie as a franchise in 1990.
There was also an earlier Michel's Patisserie. It was started in Sydney in 1980 by a French chef named Michel Cattoen and his wife Elisabeth.
