Michel's Patisserie is a popular bakery chain from Australia. It sells yummy treats like cakes, pies, and hot espresso coffee. It's a franchise system, which means many small businesses use the same brand name and recipes.
Michel's Patisserie started in 1988. Today, it has over 90 stores across Australia. Only Tasmania and Western Australia don't have one yet. About 4,000 people work for Michel's Patisserie. They serve around 36 million cups of coffee and 9.5 million slices of cake every year! It's the biggest pastry chain in Australia. In 2016, one of their stores, Michel's Patisserie Toronto, won a big award called the National Retail Association Supreme Retailer of the Year.
The company is owned by a group called Retail Food Group (RFG). This group also owns other well-known brands like Gloria Jeans Coffee, Brumby's Bakeries, and Donut King.
History of Michel's Patisserie
Michel's Patisserie was started by two people, Noel Carroll and Noel Roberts, in 1988. Their idea was to have one main bakery that made all the products. Then, these fresh products would be sent to all the different stores every day. These stores are where customers can buy the delicious cakes and pies.
Before starting, they spent two years researching everything. They looked into how to deliver products, how the stores should look, and how to train staff. They tested their ideas in stores in Castlecrag and Newport. Then, in 1990, they launched it as a franchise system.
The very first Michel's Patisserie was actually started in Sydney in 1980. It was opened by a French chef named Michel Cattoen and his wife Elisabeth.
