A Musician's Life

Michel Lambert was born in a place called Champigny-sur-Veude in France. He learned music as a young boy. He was an altar boy at the Chapel of Gaston d'Orléans. Gaston was the brother of King Louis XIII. Michel also studied music in Paris with Pierre de Nyert.

Early Career and Family

By 1636, Michel Lambert was known as a singing teacher. In 1641, he married a singer named Gabrielle Dupuis. Sadly, she passed away just one year later. Their daughter, Madeleine, was born in 1643. Later, in 1662, Madeleine married the famous composer Jean-Baptiste Lully. After his marriage, Michel Lambert worked closely with his sister-in-law, Hilaire Dupuis, who was also a well-known singer.

Court Musician

In 1651, Michel Lambert performed as a ballet dancer. This was at the court of King Louis XIV. By 1656, he became famous for his music. His compositions were often printed by Jean-Baptiste Christophe Ballard. Michel mainly wrote "airs," which are songs for a single voice. These songs used poems by writers like Isaac de Benserade and Philippe Quinault. He wrote more airs than almost anyone else in the late 1600s.

In 1661, he got an important job. He became the "Maître de musique de la chambre du roi." This means he was the Master of Music for the King's Chamber. He kept this job until he passed away. During this time, his son-in-law, Lully, also held high music positions for the King.

Teaching and Collaborations

Michel Lambert was a respected singing teacher. Many people at the time praised his skills. He also wrote dramatic airs, which are songs for plays. His work helped create a type of French opera called "tragédie lyrique."

People said he held concerts at his home in Puteaux. During these concerts, he would play the theorbo while he sang. A theorbo is a large lute-like instrument. He also worked with Lully on several ballets. One example is the Ballet des amours déguisés. Michel Lambert passed away in Paris, France.
