Soavi loved horror films from a young age. When he was 12, he saw the movie The Bird with the Crystal Plumage by Dario Argento. This inspired him to get into filmmaking. As a teenager, he took art and acting classes to chase his dream.
Career in Filmmaking
Learning the Ropes
Soavi started his film career by acting in small parts. He got his first big break as an assistant director for the filmmaker Marco Modugno. An assistant director helps the main director with many tasks on a movie set.
He continued to act in movies like Alien 2: On Earth and worked as an assistant for other directors. He learned a lot from director Joe D'Amato and even appeared in some of his films.
Soavi's career really took off when he began working with the famous horror director Dario Argento. He was the assistant director on several of Argento's films, including Tenebrae and Phenomena. He also assisted director Lamberto Bava on movies like Demons.
While working behind the scenes, Soavi often acted in the movies too. Sometimes he had small roles called cameos. He used different English-sounding names like Michael Soavi or Michael Shaw for his acting roles.
Becoming a Director
After learning from Argento for many years, Soavi directed his first project. It was a documentary called Dario Argento's World of Horror. In 1987, he directed his first full movie, a horror film called Stage Fright.
He also got the chance to work with American director Terry Gilliam on the movie The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. After that, he directed more of his own films, including The Church and The Sect.
One of his most famous movies is Cemetery Man, which came out in 1994. It was based on a novel by Tiziano Sclavi, who also created the popular Italian comic book Dylan Dog.
In the mid-1990s, Soavi took a break from making movies to care for his family. He later returned to work, mostly directing for Italian television.
In 2006, Soavi directed a crime movie called The Goodbye Kiss. It was very successful and won him a Best Director award at a film festival. He has continued to direct movies and TV shows in Italy, including the 2018 fantasy film The Legend of the Christmas Witch.
