Michelle Buteau (born July 24, 1977) is a super funny American comedian, actress, and television host. She also produces shows and hosts podcasts. She is known for her energetic personality and hilarious observations.
Early Life and First Steps
Michelle Buteau was born in New Jersey. Her dad was from Haiti, and her mom was from Jamaica. She went to college at Florida International University. For a while, she thought about becoming a journalist. But then, she found her true calling in comedy!
Becoming a Star
After college, Michelle worked for a TV news station in New York City. She often worked late at night. Her co-workers thought she was really funny. They told her she should try stand-up comedy.
In 2001, Michelle finally decided to give comedy a try. She had been working hard covering the news. She felt ready for a change. After performing stand-up for five years, she got her first big chance on Comedy Central.
In 2017, Esquire magazine named Michelle one of the top ten comedians to watch. This was a big honor!
In 2018, Michelle started hosting her own podcast called Late Night Whenever!. Time magazine even called it one of the best podcasts of that year. She also had a special on Netflix called The Comedy Lineup. Here, new comedians perform short stand-up sets.
Michelle appeared in many movies in 2019. These included Someone Great, Isn't It Romantic, and Always Be My Maybe. She also started co-hosting another podcast, Adulting, with Jordan Carlos. That same year, she was in two TV shows: First Wives Club and Tales of the City.
In 2020, Michelle became the host of The Circle. This is a popular reality TV show on Netflix.
Michelle also wrote a book! In 2020, she published Survival of the Thickest. It's a collection of personal stories. Later, in 2023, a TV show based on her book came out on Netflix. Michelle starred in it!
Her stand-up special, Michelle Buteau: Welcome to Buteaupia, won an award. It received a 2021 Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Comedy Special.
More recently, Michelle had a big role in the 2024 movie Babes. She played Dawn, the main character's best friend. She also voiced a character named Molasses in the animated film Fixed.
Personal Life
Michelle Buteau is married to Gijs van der Most. He is a photographer from the Netherlands. They got married in 2010. In January 2019, they welcomed twins into their family. Their twins were born using surrogacy. Michelle is also Catholic.
