Early Life and Education

Michelle Cartlidge was born in Hampstead, a part of London, England. Her father was British, and her mother was a refugee from Germany. Michelle also had a sister named Katrin Cartlidge, who became an actress.

Michelle studied art at two famous schools. First, she went to Hornsey College of Art. Then, she continued her studies at the Royal College of Art. She focused on ceramics, which is making things from clay.

After finishing her studies, Michelle decided to focus on drawing. She started thinking about ideas for children's books. This was a big step towards her future career.

Michelle's Amazing Career and Books

In 1979, Michelle won a special award. It was called the Mother Goose Award. She received it for her very first book, Pippin and Pod. This award recognized her as an exciting new talent in British children's books.

Since then, Michelle has published over one hundred books. These books are available in more than ten languages around the world. Her popular Teddy Trucks books were even made into an animated cartoon series for Children's BBC.

Michelle's work also helps children with hearing difficulties. Her books are featured on the Signed Stories website. Here, stories are performed in sign language. Some of her best-selling books include Mouse Ballet and The Cornish Cats Who Went To Sea.

Besides writing and illustrating her own books, Michelle has also illustrated two poetry collections. These were for young children and were written by Brian Patten. She has also designed many other items. These include a bone china gift range for Wedgwood, greeting cards, tins, and wrapping paper.

Michelle Cartlidge lives in Cornwall, England. She makes her home in a charming fishing village called Mousehole.
