About Michelle Chang's Design
Michelle Chang was 18 years old when she first appeared in Tekken. This made her one of the youngest characters at the time. In Tekken 2, she is 20 years old.
Even though she hasn't been in the main games for a long time, Michelle still appears in spin-off games like Tekken Tag Tournament and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. In these games, she looks like her younger self from Tekken 2. This makes her look similar in age to her adopted daughter, Julia.
Michelle's Fighting Style
Michelle uses a special fighting style. It's a mix of a martial art called "Chang kenpo" and another called "Xingyiquan". Her adopted daughter, Julia, later learns and uses a similar fighting style.
In Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Michelle still uses her unique style. She also gained some new moves to make her different from Julia.
Players who mastered Michelle found her very strong. She might not have the most powerful attacks, but she can hit enemies quickly. She is also good at dodging attacks and starting long combos. In Tekken Tag Tournament, Michelle is very fast. She is best played by attacking a lot, as her combos are hard for opponents to block. She can also do strong counter-attacks.
Michelle's Story in the Games
Michelle Chang is a woman with Chinese and Native American roots. Her father was from Hong Kong, and her mother is a Native American from Arizona. She is also the adoptive mother of Julia Chang.
The First Tournament
Michelle's father was asked by Heihachi Mishima to find an ancient Native American treasure. This treasure was Michelle's pendant, which was believed to control powerful spirits. When her father failed to get it for Heihachi, Heihachi's men killed him.
When Michelle turned 18, her mother told her this sad story. Michelle decided to enter The King of Iron Fist Tournament. Her goal was to get revenge on Heihachi. In the tournament, she fought and defeated Kunimitsu, a ninja who also wanted the pendant. Michelle kept the amulet safe. She left the tournament after this, feeling she had achieved her goal. She was happy that another fighter, Kazuya Mishima, defeated Heihachi.
Rescuing Her Mother
In Tekken 2, Michelle's mother was kidnapped. The kidnapper was Ganryu, who worked for Kazuya. Kazuya wanted Michelle's pendant. Michelle entered the tournament again to save her mother. She fought Ganryu and defeated him. After winning, she rescued her mother and returned home safely. Ganryu, however, had fallen in love with Michelle.
Adopting Julia
A few years later, Michelle found an abandoned baby girl near her village. She adopted the baby and named her Julia. Michelle loved Julia like her own daughter. As Julia grew up, Michelle taught her Chinese martial arts, including xingyiquan.
Later, Michelle's tribe became worried. Many martial artists around the world were disappearing. They believed this was because of a powerful being called Ogre, whose legends were known to the tribe. They feared Michelle's pendant might be connected to Ogre. Michelle went to Japan to ask Heihachi why he wanted her pendant before. But Michelle never returned. Julia then entered the tournament to find and rescue her mother. Michelle is seen reunited with Julia in Julia's ending in Tekken 3. Her story after this is not fully explained in the main games.
Other Game Appearances
Michelle is a playable character in Tekken Tag Tournament. She also returned in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 as a character you could download. In her ending movie for TTT2, Michelle wears a mask and teams up with Jaycee (who is Julia) in a professional wrestling match. Fans sometimes call her M.C., similar to J.C. for Julia.
Michelle in Other Media
Michelle also appears in the anime movie Tekken: The Motion Picture. She has a bigger role in this film. Before the tournament, she tries to attack Heihachi with an axe. Heihachi easily stops her, but welcomes her to challenge him if she reaches the tower. Michelle defeats Ganryu. However, she is beaten by Kazuya. She begs Kazuya to let her fight Heihachi to get revenge for Heihachi burning her village and causing her parents' deaths. Kazuya refuses, knowing it would be too dangerous for her. Michelle keeps fighting Kazuya until he defeats her. She is later saved from the collapsing island by Paul Phoenix.
Michelle's voice in the Japanese version of the movie is Narumi Hidaka. In the English version, she is voiced by Jessica Robertson. Michelle also appears in several Tekken comic books.
