Michelle Lynn Monaghan (born March 23, 1976) is an American actress known for her roles in action movies and drama series. She has starred in popular films like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Eagle Eye, and Source Code.
Many fans know her as Julia Meade, the wife of Ethan Hunt, in the Mission: Impossible film series. She appeared in Mission: Impossible III, Ghost Protocol, and Fallout.
On television, she earned a Golden Globe Award nomination for her role in the first season of the crime drama True Detective. She also starred in the TV series The Path and the miniseries Echoes.

Early Life and First Steps
Michelle Monaghan grew up in the small town of Winthrop, Iowa. At the time, only about 750 people lived there. Her mother, Sharon, and her father, Robert, who worked in a factory, raised her in the Catholic faith. She has two older brothers.
In 1994, she graduated from East Buchanan High School. After high school, she moved to Chicago to study journalism at Columbia College Chicago. To support herself, she started working as a model. Her modeling career took her to places all over the world, including Milan, Tokyo, and Hong Kong.
In 1999, just one semester before finishing her journalism degree, she decided to move to New York City to become an actress. She continued to model and appeared in magazines before getting her first acting roles.

Monaghan's first television appearances were in 2000 on the show Young Americans. The next year, she had a small part in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and made her movie debut in the film Perfume. In 2002, she had another small role in the movie Unfaithful.
Her first big break came in 2002 when she joined the cast of the TV show Boston Public as Kimberly Woods. After a season on the show, she focused on movies. She appeared in It Runs in the Family and Winter Solstice.
Becoming a Movie Star
In 2005, Monaghan starred with Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer in the action-comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. This role helped make her more famous. That same year, she had a part in the movie Constantine, but most of her scenes were cut from the final film.
Her career grew even more when she joined the Mission: Impossible series. In 2006, she played Julia Meade in Mission: Impossible III alongside Tom Cruise. She returned to this popular role in two more films.
Over the next few years, she starred in many different kinds of movies. She was in the comedy The Heartbreak Kid with Ben Stiller and the crime thriller Gone Baby Gone with Casey Affleck. In 2008, she starred in the romantic comedy Made of Honor and the action-packed film Eagle Eye with Shia LaBeouf. In 2011, she starred with Jake Gyllenhaal in the science-fiction movie Source Code.
Success in Television and Recent Work
In 2014, Monaghan received praise for her role as Maggie Hart in the first season of the HBO series True Detective. Her performance earned her a nomination for a Golden Globe Award. From 2016 to 2018, she starred in the drama series The Path.
In 2020, she played a CIA agent in the Netflix series Messiah. In 2022, she played twin sisters in the thriller miniseries Echoes.
More recently, Monaghan appeared in the 2024 horror film Ma...ine and starred in the third season of the award-winning show The White Lotus.
Personal Life
In 2000, Monaghan met Peter White, a graphic artist from Australia, at a party. They got married in August 2005 in Port Douglas, Australia. The couple lives in New York and has two children: a daughter born in 2008 and a son born in 2013.
