A Look Back in Time

The Michigan Millers Mutual Fire Insurance Company started in 1881. Their main goal was to offer fire insurance for mills. Mills are places where things like grain are ground into flour.

In 1890, the company decided they needed their own office building. They hired a local architect named Darius B. Moon to design it. The company used this building from 1890 until 1928. After that, they moved to a bigger building nearby called the Mutual Building.

What Does It Look Like?

The Michigan Millers Mutual Fire Insurance Company Building has two stories. It is a narrow building with a style called Richardsonian Romanesque. This style often uses heavy stone and round arches.

The building is made of red brick with sandstone details. It has a tower that sticks out, supported by short, strong columns. The front of the first floor, which used to be a shop, was changed over the years. In 1978, it was updated to match the building's original look. It now has paneled doors and special windows.

On the second floor, you can see two round-topped windows framed in brick. A metal trim, called a cornice, sits at the very top of the building.
