The Macedonia Baptist Church, also known as the Michigan Street Baptist Church, is a very old and important African American Baptist church in Buffalo, New York. It was built from bricks in 1845. This church has a rich history, especially for the African American community in Buffalo.

A Special Place in History

The Michigan Street Baptist Church is a significant landmark. It played a big role in the lives of African Americans in Buffalo. It was a place for worship, community gatherings, and important discussions.

Building the Church

The church building was constructed in 1845. Samuel H. Davis was the fifth pastor of the church. He helped raise money to build it. As a skilled mason, he even did much of the building work himself. Samuel H. Davis was also a leader in the fight for civil rights. He gave a welcoming speech at the 1843 National Convention of Colored Citizens of America. This was a major meeting where African American leaders discussed important issues.

Important Leaders

Another important leader was Reverend J. Edward Nash (1868–1957). He served as the church's pastor for a very long time, from 1892 to 1953. That's over 60 years! His home, the Rev. J. Edward Nash, Sr. House, is located close to the church. Reverend Nash's work and papers are still studied today.
