Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Michael John Hoy (born 1913, died 2000) was a famous Irish musician. He was a talented singer, a great fiddler (someone who plays the fiddle), a composer (someone who writes music), and a wonderful storyteller. Mick, as he was known, was born in Monea, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

When he was young, Mick got a job at the Derrygonnelly Fair with a farmer who played the fiddle. This farmer taught Mick how to play the instrument. In the 1930s and 1940s, Mick played with local Céilí bands. These were groups that played traditional Irish music for dancing. He was part of the Sillees and the Knockmore Céilí Band. Mick lived most of his life in Blaney and often played music in Derrygonnelly. His family was very musical, but Mick was known as the most talented. He knew a huge number of tunes and songs.

Mick Hoy's Unique Music Style

Mick Hoy was known for his special way of singing. He used his voice in a very subtle and beautiful way. He was also one of the best fiddlers of his time. His powerful playing style was a mix of music traditions from both Northern and Southern Ireland.

His Amazing Collection of Tunes

Mick had many tunes that were unique to his local area. He learned a lot of these special tunes from his old friend, Eddie Duffy, who was a fantastic flute player. Mick also shared his music with many other musicians. He taught tunes to people like Cathal McConnell (from the band The Boys of the Lough), the band Altan, Seamus Quinn, Ben Lennon, and Jim McGrath. This helped keep the traditional music alive and passed on to new generations.

Sharing His Music with the World

In 1986, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland released a cassette tape called Here is a Health. This tape featured songs, fiddle tunes, and stories that were recorded by Seán Corcoran between 1979 and 1985 in the Derrygonnelly area. Mick Hoy was a big part of this album. He was featured on ten of the twenty-six tracks, showing off his amazing talent to a wider audience.

Remembering Mick Hoy and Eddie Duffy

To honor the memory of Mick Hoy and Eddie Duffy, a special event is held every year. The Eddie Duffy and Mick Hoy Memorial Traditional Music Festival takes place on the second weekend in October in Derrygonnelly. It's a great way to celebrate their contributions to traditional Irish music and keep their legacy alive.
