Michael Francis McGeough (June 20, 1956 – November 23, 2018) was a well-known ice hockey referee in the National Hockey League (NHL). He wore jersey number 19 from the 1994–95 NHL season until he retired in 2008.

McGeough's Hockey Career

Michael McGeough started his career in the NHL in 1987. He was one of the last NHL officials who worked games without wearing a helmet. This changed in the 2006–07 season. From then on, all on-ice officials had to wear a helmet for safety.

McGeough officiated many games during his career. He worked 1,083 regular season games and 63 playoff games. He also officiated in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, which is a very important event in hockey. His last regular season game was on April 5, 2008, between the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings.

After retiring from officiating, McGeough continued to help the NHL. He worked to train new referees coming from the American Hockey League. In 2013, he was honored by being named to the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame.

Mick was also the older brother of Jim McGeough, who played in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals. His other brother, Tim McGeough, was a Canadian Junior football player and coach.

Later Life and Passing

On November 18, 2018, Mick McGeough became very ill and was taken to the hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan. His health got much worse. After doctors determined that his condition would not improve, he returned home to be with his family.

Four days later, on November 23, his family announced that McGeough had passed away peacefully at the age of 62.

During the 2018-19 NHL season, NHL referees honored McGeough. They wore a special patch on their jersey arms that said “MICK” to remember him.
