The Floreana lava lizard (scientific name: Microlophus grayii) is a special type of lizard. It's also known as Gray's lava lizard or Gray's Pacific iguana. About the Floreana Lava Lizard

What's in a Name?

The scientific name for this lizard is Microlophus grayii. The second part of its name, grayii, was chosen to honor a British scientist named John Edward Gray. He studied reptiles like this lizard.

Where it Lives

The Floreana lava lizard is found only in one place in the world. It lives on Floreana Island in the Galapagos, which is part of Ecuador. You can also find it on smaller islands nearby, like Champion and Gardner.

Its Home Environment

These lizards like to live in shrubland, which is an area with lots of bushes and small trees. They can be found from the coast all the way up to about 640 meters (2,100 feet) high. Sometimes, they even live in towns and cities!

Life Cycle

The Floreana lava lizard is an oviparous animal. This means that the female lizard lays eggs. The young lizards then hatch from these eggs.
