Micromidia is a group of amazing dragonflies. Scientists call a group like this a "genus." These dragonflies belong to a bigger family called Austrocorduliidae.

Micromidia dragonflies are usually small to medium in size. They often have cool colors like black or shiny metallic green. They also have lighter marks on their bodies. You can only find these special dragonflies in eastern Australia. This means they are "endemic" to that area.

Types of Micromidia Dragonflies

The Micromidia group includes a few different kinds of dragonflies. Here are some of them:

  • Micromidia atrifrons: This one was first described by McLachlan in 1883. It's sometimes called the forest mosquitohawk.
  • Micromidia convergens: Theischinger and Watson described this dragonfly in 1978. People sometimes call it the early mosquitohawk.
  • Micromidia rodericki: Fraser first described this species in 1959. It is known as the Thursday Island mosquitohawk.

Which Family Do They Belong To?

Scientists sometimes have different ideas about which family Micromidia dragonflies fit into best. It's like trying to decide which branch of a family tree someone belongs on!

  • The Australian Faunal Directory thinks they are part of the Austrocorduliidae family.
  • The World Odonata List, found at the Slater Museum of Natural History, believes they are part of the Synthemistidae family.
  • On Wikispecies, they are listed as part of the Corduliidae family.

This shows that science is always learning new things. Sometimes, experts have different ideas until more research is done!
