What Was Microsoft FrontPage?
Microsoft FrontPage was a special tool for making websites. It let you design web pages without needing to write complicated computer code. This made it popular for many people who wanted to create their own websites.
How FrontPage Helped Make Websites
FrontPage was known as a "WYSIWYG" editor. This means "What You See Is What You Get." When you used FrontPage, you could see how your webpage would look while you were building it. You could drag and drop pictures, type text, and arrange things on the screen. FrontPage would then write the correct computer code (like HTML) for you behind the scenes. This made website design much simpler.
Different Versions of FrontPage
Microsoft released several versions of FrontPage over the years. Some of the main ones included:
- FrontPage 98
- FrontPage 2000
- FrontPage 2002
- FrontPage 2003
There was also a free version called FrontPage Express. This smaller version came with earlier releases of Internet Explorer. It was a good way for people to try making web pages without buying the full program. FrontPage Express could even work on older computers, like those running Windows XP.
The End of FrontPage
The 2003 version of FrontPage was the last one ever made. Microsoft stopped selling and supporting FrontPage in 2006. It was replaced by two newer programs: Microsoft Expression Web and Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer. These new tools offered more advanced features for professional web developers.
Who Made FrontPage First?
Before Microsoft bought it, the first version of FrontPage was created by a company called Vermeer Technologies. Microsoft later acquired Vermeer Technologies, bringing FrontPage into the Microsoft family of software.
