The Middletown Rural Historic District is a special area in Grafton, Vermont. It was once the main part of the town! This historic district is found along Middletown Road. It has nine old buildings from the 1800s that are still in great shape. You can also find the town's first cemetery and an old animal pound here.
This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. This means it is a very important place in American history.
Exploring Middletown's Past
The area around Grafton was first set up in 1754. But people only started living there for good in the late 1770s. The first town center was on a hill. This hill is now right in the middle of the Middletown Rural Historic District.
By 1830, other parts of Grafton became more important. These areas were along the Saxtons River. Today, the Middletown area is mostly quiet and rural. There are a few buildings grouped together at the corner of Middletown and Woodchuck Hill Road.
What You Can See in the District
The Middletown Rural Historic District stretches along Middletown Road. It goes from Grafton Village to Vermont Route 121. Several smaller roads branch off Middletown Road. These roads also have historic buildings.
The oldest things in the district are the cemetery and the Hall House. Both of these date back to about 1790. Most of the houses are made of wood. They are built in the Federal or Greek Revival styles. Three of the houses are made of brick.
The old town pound is also here. Its stone walls were built around 1808. It is located near the cemetery. An old schoolhouse from 1856 stands at the end of Middletown Road. This schoolhouse marks the northern edge of the district.
