The Midland Theatre's Story
Early Days as a Movie Palace
The Midland Theatre first opened its doors on December 20, 1928. For 50 years, it was a popular movie theater in Newark, Ohio. People would go there to watch all the latest films.
In 1978, the theatre closed its doors. It tried to reopen for a short time, but it closed again. The building needed a lot of repairs and was not in good shape.
Bringing the Theatre Back to Life
In 1992, a person named Dave Longaberger and his company, The Longaberger Company, bought the theatre. They wanted to fix it up. It took 8 years and about $8.5 million to make it new again!
After all that hard work, the Midland Theatre reopened in the year 2000. It was ready for new shows and audiences.
Who Runs the Midland Today?
Dave Longaberger gave the theatre to a special group called The Newark Midland Theatre Association. This group is a non-profit organization. This means they are a volunteer group that helps the theatre run.
The theatre also gets help from the Ohio Arts Council. This support helps the Midland Theatre bring amazing shows to Newark. Today, you can see many different musical performances there. Famous performers from all over the country come to play at the Midland.
