On April 11, 1965, a series of very strong tornadoes hit several states, including Indiana. This day is remembered as the 1965 Palm Sunday tornado outbreak. It was one of the largest and most destructive tornado outbreaks in United States history.

Impact on Midway

One of the tornadoes, an F4 on the Fujita scale, directly struck Midway. The F4 rating means it was an extremely powerful tornado with winds between 207 and 260 miles per hour. This tornado mainly hit the Midway Trailer Court. Sadly, ten people in Midway lost their lives during this event.

Wider Impact in Elkhart County

The same tornado that hit Midway also affected the nearby city of Goshen, Indiana. It caused a lot of damage and sadly, many more lives were lost across Elkhart County. In total, 31 people died in the county due to these tornadoes. The event was a very difficult time for the entire region.
