Midway, Joplin facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Midway was once a small village in northern Newton County, Missouri. It was almost completely surrounded by the larger city of Joplin. On its east side, Midway shared a border with another small community called Sunnyvale. Today, both Midway and Sunnyvale are no longer separate villages. They have joined with the city of Joplin.

What Was Midway?

Midway was known as a "village." A village is a small community, often smaller than a town or city. It has its own local government and rules. However, Midway is now a "former" village. This means it no longer exists as a separate place with its own government. It became part of Joplin.

Where Was Midway Located?

Midway was situated in the northern part of Newton County, Missouri. It was very close to the city of Joplin. Imagine Joplin as a big circle; Midway was inside that circle, or very nearly so. It was located on the south side of 32nd Street. This road is also known as Missouri Supplemental Route FF.

Why Did Midway Merge with Joplin?

Sometimes, smaller communities decide to join with larger ones. This is called a "merger." When Midway and Sunnyvale merged with Joplin, it meant they became part of the bigger city. This can happen for many reasons. For example, it can help with shared services like police, fire, or water. It can also make local government simpler. After the merger, the people living in Midway became residents of Joplin.
