Miguel Sanz's Early Life and Career
Miguel Sanz first worked as a teacher for young students. Later, he studied how to manage businesses at the University of Navarre.
He became the mayor of his hometown, Corella, from 1983 to 1987. In 1983, he was also chosen to be a member of the Parliament of Navarre. He continued to serve in the Parliament for many years.
Rising in Politics
In 1989, Miguel Sanz was elected as the vice-president of the UPN party. He then became the vice-president of Navarre from 1991 to 1995. This was during the time when Juan Cruz Alli was the president.
In 1996, Miguel Sanz was elected as the president of Navarre. The next year, in 1997, he became the leader of the UPN party. He held this position until 2009, when Yolanda Barcina, who was the mayor of Pamplona, took over.
Miguel Sanz was president for eleven years. In 2007, some political parties that had different ideas from his won more seats in the Navarrese parliament. These parties included those with left-wing views and those who supported Basque nationalism.
However, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and UPN made an agreement. Because of this agreement, Miguel Sanz was re-elected as president. His party, UPN, worked together with the Democrats' Convergence of Navarre. Elena Torres Miranda, a socialist, became the president of the parliament.
Miguel Sanz stated in an interview that he did not plan to run for president again in the 2011 elections in Navarre.
Political Views
Miguel Sanz was known for strongly disagreeing with Basque nationalism. This is a political idea that believes the Basque Country should be independent or have more power. He also disagreed with a certain way of managing money for the government.
His strong views on these topics led to a change in the relationship between his party, UPN, and the People's Party. In 2008, the People's Party of Navarre reappeared as a separate group.
