Miguel Sanz Sesma was born on September 16, 1952. He is a Spanish politician. He was a member of the Navarrese People's Union (UPN) party. From 1996 to 2011, he served as the president of Navarre. Navarre is one of Spain's autonomous communities, which are like self-governing regions.
Miguel Sanz's Life and Career
Miguel Sanz first worked as a teacher for young students. Later, he studied how to manage businesses at the University of Navarre.
He became the mayor of his hometown, Corella, in 1983. He served as mayor until 1987. In the same year, 1983, he was also chosen to be a member of the Parliament of Navarre. He continued to serve in the Parliament from then on.
In 1989, he became the vice-president of his political party, UPN. From 1991 to 1995, he was the vice-president of Navarre. This was when Juan Cruz Alli, also from UPN, was the president.
Miguel Sanz was elected president of Navarre in 1996. He also became the leader of the UPN party in 1997. He held this position until 2009. That's when Yolanda Barcina, who was the mayor of Pamplona, took over as party leader.
After being president for eleven years, his position faced a challenge in 2007. This happened because parties that wanted more independence for the Basque region won more seats in the Navarrese parliament.
However, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party made an agreement with UPN. Because of this agreement, Miguel Sanz was re-elected as president. His party worked together with the Democrats' Convergence of Navarre. Elena Torres Miranda, a socialist, became the president of the parliament.
In an interview, Miguel Sanz said he did not plan to run for president again in the 2011 elections.
His Political Views
Miguel Sanz was known for strongly disagreeing with ideas of Basque independence. He also had different views on how money should be managed by the government. These differences led to his party, UPN, no longer being closely linked with the People's Party. This happened in 2008, and the People's Party of Navarre started up again.
