Miguel Verdiguier was born in Marseille, France, in 1706. He became a director at the Marseille Academy of Statutory, which was a school for sculptors. Later, he became an important member of the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, Spain. This shows he was a highly respected artist.
His Work in Spain
In 1765, a group from the Cordoba Cathedral asked Verdiguier to build a special monument. This monument was for the Archangel San Rafael and was placed near the Puerta del Puente (Bridge Gate).
Verdiguier also created beautiful pulpits for the Cordoba Cathedral. These pulpits were made in a style called Churrigueresque. This style is known for being very detailed and decorative. Some of his other works can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts in Cordoba.
He also made all the outdoor sculptures for the front of the Sanctuary of the Cathedral of Jaen. In 1780, he worked with his son to create reliefs for the front of the S. Cecilio chapel at the Granada Cathedral. A relief is a type of sculpture where shapes are carved so they stand out from a flat surface.
