D. Miguel de Castro (1536–1625) was an important religious and political leader in Portugal. He held several high-ranking positions during his life. He was a Bishop in Viseu and later became the Archbishop of Lisbon. He also served as the Viceroy of Portugal, which was like being the king's main representative in the country.

Miguel de Castro studied at the University of Coimbra, where he earned a doctorate in Theology. This means he was an expert in religious studies. In 1556, he was appointed as an Inquisitor of the Holy Office. This was a role in the church that investigated matters of faith. Eleven years later, he became a member of the General Council, which was an important group that advised the church.

Miguel de Castro's Life and Career

Early Career and Rise to Power

Miguel de Castro was supported by Cardinal-King Henry of Portugal. This support helped him to advance quickly in the church. In 1579, he became the Bishop of Viseu. A bishop is a high-ranking priest who oversees a specific area.

Just a few years later, in 1585, he was named the Archbishop of Lisbon. This was a very important position, as Lisbon was the capital city. He took over from D. Jorge de Almeida.

Important Church and Government Roles

As Archbishop, Miguel de Castro was responsible for reprinting the Constituições do Arcebispado de Lisboa. These were important rules and laws for the Archdiocese of Lisbon. He made sure both the old and new rules were included.

He also held powerful positions during the Philippine rule in Portugal. This was a time when Spain ruled Portugal. In 1593, he was one of the Governors of the Kingdom. This meant he helped manage the country on behalf of the king.

In 1611, a book about Bartolomeu da Costa was dedicated to Miguel de Castro. This shows how respected he was by other important people.

Serving as Viceroy of Portugal

In 1615, Miguel de Castro took on an even higher role. He became the Viceroy of Portugal, following Bishop Pedro de Castilho. The Viceroy was the highest official in Portugal when the king was not present. It was a very powerful job, and he held this position for two years.

Miguel de Castro passed away in 1625 in Lisbon, Portugal. He is remembered for his long career in both the church and government.
