Miguel de Zañartu Santa María (born in 1786, died on October 25, 1851) was an important Chilean politician and lawyer. He played a big part in Chile's fight for independence from Spain.

Miguel de Zañartu was born in 1786. He grew up to become a lawyer, which means he understood laws and helped people with legal matters. Later, he became a politician, working to make decisions for his country.

Helping Chile Become Free

Miguel de Zañartu was a strong supporter of Chile's independence. People who wanted Chile to be free were called Patriots. Those who wanted Chile to stay under Spanish rule were called Royalists.

The Chilean Independence War

The Chilean Independence War was a time when Chile fought to become its own country. Miguel de Zañartu was a key figure during this war. He believed strongly that Chile should be independent.

Exile and Return

In 1814, the Royalists gained control, and the Patriots faced a difficult time. This period was known as the Patria Vieja (Old Homeland). Because of his strong beliefs, Miguel de Zañartu was forced to leave Chile. He went to Mendoza, a city in Argentina, to live in exile.

He stayed there until 1817. When the situation changed, he was able to return to Chile.

Signing the Declaration of Independence

After returning, Miguel de Zañartu continued his work for an independent Chile. He was one of the important people who signed the Chilean Declaration of Independence. This document officially declared Chile's freedom from Spain.

Miguel de Zañartu passed away on October 25, 1851. He is remembered as a brave Patriot who helped shape Chile's history.
