Migvie Castle was an old castle built in the 1200s. It was located in Scotland, near a place called Migvie in Aberdeenshire. Today, only small parts of the castle remain. In 2007, these remains were officially protected as a scheduled monument. This means they are an important historical site.
The Story of Migvie Castle
Migvie Castle was built in a very important spot. It stood on a hill overlooking an old road. This road connected towns like Aboyne and Strathdon. Because of its location, the castle was a powerful place.
Who Owned Migvie Castle?
The castle is first mentioned in a special document from 1268. This document was written by Uilleam, Earl of Mar. At that time, Migvie Castle was the main home of the Lord of Cromar. It was also the center of the Barony of Cromar. A barony was like a large area of land controlled by a powerful lord.
Later, in the 1440s, the Rutherford family of Tarland owned the castle. Then, in 1452, it passed to Alexander Gordon, the Earl of Huntly. The Earls of Huntly were a very important family in Scottish history.
What's Left Today?
Today, you can only see small traces of the castle's outer wall. These are found above the ground. Even though not much is left, these remains tell us about a significant part of Scottish history.
