Mihály Csokonai Vitéz (born November 17, 1773 – died January 28, 1805) was a famous Hungarian poet. He was a very important writer during a time called the Age of Enlightenment. This was a period when people started to think new ideas about society and art.

Early Life and Education

Mihály Csokonai Vitéz was born in the city of Debrecen, Hungary. He also received his education there. When he was still quite young, he became a teacher of poetry at a school in Debrecen.

However, he soon lost this teaching job. He had some difficulties with his behavior, which led to him leaving the position.

Later Life and Works

The rest of Mihály Csokonai Vitéz's life was quite difficult. He lived for only twelve more years after losing his teaching job. He passed away in his hometown, at his mother's house, when he was just 31 years old.

Csokonai was a very talented and original poet. He had a special way with words, similar to another famous Hungarian poet, Sándor Petőfi. He wrote many different kinds of works:

  • A funny, long poem called Dorottya. This poem is about a party where ladies have a triumph during a carnival.
  • A few comedies or plays that were quite amusing.
  • Many beautiful love poems.

Most of his writings were put together and published by Schedel between 1844 and 1847.
