Mika Miyazato's Golf Journey
Early Golf Days
Mika Miyazato started playing golf at a young age. When she was just 14, she won the 2004 Japan Amateur Women's Championship. This made her the youngest person ever to win that event.
In 2006, Mika competed in the Asian Games. She won two silver medals there. One was for her individual performance, and the other was with her team.
Mika became a professional golfer in December 2008. She earned her spot on the LPGA Tour by doing well in a special qualifying tournament.
First Years as a Pro
In 2009, at 19 years old, Mika had a great first year as a professional. She finished fourth in two big tournaments: the LPGA Corning Classic and the Wegmans LPGA.
Her first professional win came in October 2010 at the Japan Women's Open Golf Championship. That same year, she finished in the top 10 five times on the LPGA Tour. She earned over $600,000, which is a lot of money in golf!
In 2011, Mika led the U.S. Women's Open after two rounds. She ended up finishing fifth in that major championship. She also had three other top-10 finishes that year.
Best Season in 2012
The year 2012 was Mika's best season on the LPGA Tour. After a slow start, she began to play much better in June. She tied for third place at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.
The very next week, she tied for second at the LPGA Championship. This is one of golf's major tournaments. Soon after, she tied for second again at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.
Mika won her first LPGA Tour event in August 2012. This victory happened at the Safeway Classic in Oregon. For the whole season, she earned over $1 million and had nine top-10 finishes.
Later Career and Wins
In October 2013, Mika won her second Japan Women's Open Golf Championship title. She won by just one stroke, making a birdie on the very last hole.
After 2013, her earnings on the LPGA Tour changed each year. In 2015, she earned over $500,000 again, with a second-place finish at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.
Mika continued to play on the LPGA Tour for several more years. She had one top-10 finish in 2016. Her appearances on the LPGA Tour became less frequent in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
It's interesting to know that even though she shares a last name with another famous Japanese golfer, Ai Miyazato, they are not related. Both are from Okinawa.
