Mikael Jansson's Political Journey
Early Steps in Politics
Mikael Jansson started his political journey in 1990. He joined the Centre Party. He even became a vice-president in their local organization in Örebro. He also served as a stand-in member on the Vasa municipal board in Örebro.
Leading the Sweden Democrats
In 1993, Jansson decided to switch parties. He joined the Sweden Democrats. By 1994, he was elected as a vice-president within the party. A year later, in 1995, he became the new party chairman. This happened at a big meeting in Norrköping. He led the party for ten years. In May 2005, Jimmie Åkesson took over as chairman. That same year, Jansson wrote a book. It was called I eget spår genom obruten terräng. The book was about his time as the party leader.
Jansson also led the local party group in Gothenburg. He did this from 1995 to 2014. In the 2006 elections, he was chosen to be on the City Council in Gothenburg. He was also a candidate for the European Parliament in 2009.
Serving in Parliament
In 2010, Mikael Jansson was a candidate for a special role. This role was Second Deputy Speaker of the Riksdag. The Riksdag is Sweden's parliament. However, he was not chosen for this position.
Since 2010, he has been a member of parliament. This means he helps make laws for Sweden. He was also part of the defence committee. This group looks at issues related to Sweden's military. He was also the party's spokesperson for defence. From 2012 to 2014, Jansson was part of the defence commission. This group studies what Sweden's defence policy should be in the future.
Working on Defence Policy
Mikael Jansson is also one of twelve members of the Swedish Export Control Council (ECC). This is a group chosen by parliament. They advise a government agency called the Inspectorate of Strategic Products (ISP). Their job is to help decide how Sweden handles exporting war materials. The Sweden Democrats party has one seat in this council.
On February 1, 2017, the Swedish government decided to start a new defence commission. Jansson was chosen to represent the Sweden Democrats party in this group. The commission was set to finish its work in May 2019.
Joining Alternative for Sweden
On April 9, 2018, Mikael Jansson left the Sweden Democrats. He then joined a new party. This party is called Alternative for Sweden. It was formed by people who had left the Sweden Democrats.
