Owen Michael Carter, known as Mike Carter, was an American politician. He was born on October 16, 1953, and passed away on May 15, 2021. He was a member of the Republican Party.
Mike Carter served in the Tennessee House of Representatives. He represented District 29 from January 8, 2013, until his death in 2021. During his time as a representative, he was the leader of the House Civil Justice Committee.
His Education
Mike Carter went to college at Middle Tennessee State University. There, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. After that, he studied law at the University of Memphis. He received his Doctor of Law degree, which allowed him to become a lawyer.
His Time in Politics
Before becoming a state representative, Mike Carter worked as a judge. In 1997, he was chosen to be a Judge for the General Sessions Court in Hamilton County, Tennessee.
In 2012, the representative for District 29, JoAnne Favors, decided to retire. This meant the seat in the Tennessee House of Representatives was open. Mike Carter decided to run for this position. He ran without anyone opposing him in both the primary and general elections. This made it easy for him to win the seat.
In June 2020, Mike Carter and another representative, David Byrd, voted on a special resolution. This resolution stated that some news reports about COVID-19 were exaggerated for political reasons. In August 2020, Mike Carter became very sick with COVID-19 and needed to be treated in the intensive care unit.
Health and Passing
In November 2020, while being treated for COVID-19, Mike Carter was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He passed away from pancreatic cancer at his home on May 15, 2021. He was 67 years old.
After his passing, his wife, Joan Carter, was appointed to fill his seat temporarily. Later, on September 14, 2021, a special election was held. Greg Vital, a Republican, was elected to officially take Mike Carter's place in the Tennessee House of Representatives.
