Playing in College
After high school, Richardson went to the University of Notre Dame. In 2002, his first year, he didn't play in games but practiced with the team. This is called "redshirting."
In 2003, he played in all 13 games for Notre Dame. He mostly played on special teams, which are units used for kickoffs and punts. He also played a little bit at cornerback in three games.
During the 2004 season, Richardson started five games as a cornerback. He caught one interception, which is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player. He also caused three fumbles, which means he knocked the ball loose from an opposing player.
In 2005, Richardson started every game, all 12 of them, at cornerback. He made 66 tackles, which was the fifth-highest on his team. He also got three more interceptions that year.
As a senior in 2006, Richardson was a standout player. He led all independent Division I-A schools with four interceptions. For his last two years at Notre Dame, his coach was Charlie Weis. Weis later became an offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.

New England Patriots (2007-2009)
The New England Patriots chose Mike Richardson in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft. This was a big step for him to play in the NFL. However, on August 28, 2007, he was placed on injured reserve. This meant he couldn't play that season due to an injury.
In 2008, the Patriots let him go during the final team cuts on August 30. But he was quickly re-signed to their practice squad on September 1. A practice squad is where players train with the team but aren't on the main roster. On October 20, he was moved to the Patriots' active roster. That same day, he played in his first regular season NFL game. It was a Monday Night Football game against the Denver Broncos. He made six tackles in that game, which was his best for the season.
