Playing career 1946–1951

Mike Yaschuk (born November 5, 1922 – died August 7, 2020) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach. He played in important hockey leagues in Canada and England. After he stopped playing, he became a coach in Manitoba. He is a special member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.

Early Life and Junior Hockey

Mike Yaschuk was born in Ituna, Saskatchewan. He started playing junior hockey with the St. Boniface Athletics. In the 1942–43 season, he was the top scorer in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL). After that, he joined the Canadian Navy to serve in World War II.

Playing Professional Hockey

When World War II ended, Yaschuk returned to play senior ice hockey. He played for the Winnipeg Reo Flyers from 1946 to 1948. Then, he spent one season with the Saskatoon Quakers in the Western Canada Senior Hockey League during 1948–49.

After playing in Canada, Mike moved to England. There, he played one season with the Streatham Redhawks. His team became the champions of the English National League in 1950. He then came back to Canada. He played one more season of senior hockey, joining the Letellier Maple Leafs for some games before he retired from playing.

Coaching Career

After his time as a player, Yaschuk became a coach. For 12 years, he coached younger teams (midget and juvenile) at Norwood Falcon C.C. He also helped start and coached the St. Boniface Mohawks in the Manitoba Senior League.

Mike Yaschuk passed away on August 7, 2020, when he was 97 years old.
