Mikey D, whose real name is Michael Anthony Deering, is an American rapper born on November 25, 1967. He is famous for being a main member of two hip hop groups: Mikey D & The L.A. Posse and Main Source. He joined Main Source after another rapper, Large Professor, left the group.

Early Life and School

Mikey D was born on November 25, 1967, in Laurelton, Queens, New York City, New York. His parents were Linda Deering and Victor Fisher. When he was young, his parents separated. He was then raised by his grandparents, Jerome and Betty Deering, in Laurelton, Queens.

He went to PS 37 and JHS 231 in Queens. Later, he attended Springfield Gardens High School.

Music Career

Starting Out in Music

In 1985, Mikey D and his group, the Symbolic Three, signed with Reality Records. Around the same time, Mikey and his friend Johnnie Quest met a talented new music producer named Paul "Paul C" McKasty. They met him through some friends from the Cliente Brothers group.

Mikey D then formed a new group with Paul C and his childhood friend, DJ Johnnie Quest. Mikey D said they first wanted to call their group "Boom Bash." However, one of their managers thought it wasn't a good name. So, they decided to call the group Mikey D & the L.A. Posse.

First Songs and Battle Wins

The group signed with Public Records. In 1987, they released their first song called "My Telephone." They also released other tracks like "Dawn" and "Bust a Rhyme." Later that year, they put out two more songs, "I Get Rough" and "Go For It."

In 1988, Mikey D won a big competition called the New Music Seminar Battle for World Supremacy. He competed against another famous rapper, Melle Mel, and won!

Challenges and New Beginnings

While Mikey D's group was working on an album, something very sad happened. Their producer, Paul C, passed away. This was a difficult time for Mikey D.

There were also some problems with another group that was also called the L.A. Posse. This other group was from Los Angeles. Mikey D's record label, Sleeping Bag Records, was sued because of the name being the same. Because of this, Sleeping Bag Records had to stop using the group's name.

After Paul C's passing and the name issue, Mikey D took a three-year break from making music. He spent some time in Miami, Florida. His manager, Mike Beasley, had a cousin who owned a music studio in Manhattan, New York City. Mikey D's manager tried to get him a new record deal.

Joining Main Source

Instead of a solo deal, Mikey D caught the attention of R&B singer Jeff Redd. Jeff Redd heard Mikey D rapping freely and was impressed. Redd told Mikey D about a hip hop group called Main Source that needed a new main rapper.

Mikey D contacted the group and rapped for them. They really liked what they heard! In 1993, he officially became a member of Main Source. This group was well-known and came from Toronto and Queens. Mikey D joined after Large Professor left the group to start his own solo career.

With Main Source, Mikey D released a song called "What You Need." This song did well on the Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart, reaching number 48.

Recent Projects

In 2008, Mikey D was featured on a song called "Pump Ya Fist Like This." This song was on Large Professor's third album, which was also called Main Source.

In 2016, Mikey D released his very first solo album. It was called Day of D'Struction and was put out by Elements of Hip Hop.

In 2020, Mikey D started his own company called Pass the Torch. It's a distribution company, which means it helps get music out to people. He is the founder and still runs his company today.

Mikey D also has his own show on YouTube called The Real Mikey D History (His-story). It's a documentary series that started in 2021.
