Mikheil Kavelashvili (born 22 July 1971) is a famous Georgian person. He used to be a professional footballer. He played as a striker. Later, he became a politician.
On 29 December 2024, he became the 6th President of Georgia. However, some people and countries do not agree with this election. He was the only person on the ballot for this election.

Football Star and Politician
Mikheil Kavelashvili is known for two main careers. First, he was a successful football player. He played for big clubs like Manchester City in England. He also played for many teams in Switzerland. He was part of the Georgian national team.
After his football career, he entered politics. He became a member of the Parliament of Georgia. In 2024, he was chosen to be the President of Georgia.
Playing for Clubs
Mikheil started his football journey at Dinamo Tbilisi in 1989. He quickly became a key player. In 1995, he moved to Russia and played for Spartak Vladikavkaz. He even won the Russian Premier League with them.
In 1996, Mikheil joined Manchester City in England. His friend and fellow Georgian player, Georgi Kinkladze, suggested him. Mikheil scored a goal in his very first game against Manchester United.
After Manchester City, he played for many clubs in Switzerland. These included Grasshoppers, Zürich, Luzern, Sion, and Aarau. He won a league title with Grasshoppers in 1998.
In 2005, he joined Basel. He played for them for two seasons. He often came on as a substitute. He scored 4 goals for Basel before he stopped playing professional football.
International Games
Mikheil also played for his country, the Georgian national team. He played 46 games for Georgia. He scored 9 goals for his country. In 1998, he helped Georgia win the Malta International Football Tournament.
Becoming a Politician
Mikheil Kavelashvili started his political career in 2016. He was elected to the Parliament of Georgia. He was part of the Georgian Dream party. He was re-elected in 2020.
In 2022, he helped start a new political group called People's Power. This group worked closely with the Georgian Dream party. In the 2024 election, he was elected to parliament again.
He has spoken about his views on politics. He believes some groups try to harm Georgia.
The Presidential Election
In November 2024, Mikheil Kavelashvili was chosen to run for president. The election happened on 14 December 2024. He was the only candidate.
He received almost all the votes from the people who elect the president. He was announced as the next president. His inauguration was planned for 29 December 2024.
However, many people and groups in Georgia did not agree with this election. They said it was not fair. The previous president, Salome Zourabichvili, also said the election was not legitimate. This caused many protests in Georgia.
It was the first time in Georgia's history that voters had only one choice for president. The European Parliament later stated that they do not recognize him as the legitimate president. Mikheil Kavelashvili is the second former football player to become a country's president. The first was George Weah in Liberia.
His Family
Mikheil Kavelashvili is married to Tamar Bagrationi. She was born in 1971. Tamar is the sister of a singer named Liza Bagrationi.
He has four children:
- Mariam Kavelashvili, born in 1996 in Manchester, England.
- Guram Kavelashvili, born in 2001 in Zurich, Switzerland.
- Elizabeth Kavelashvili, born in 2013 in Tbilisi, Georgia.
- Giorgi Ivanishvili, born in 1989 in Tbilisi, Georgia. Giorgi is his stepchild.
