Early Life and College Years
Mikki Moore was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He went to Blacksburg High School in Blacksburg, South Carolina, and finished in 1993.
After high school, Moore played college basketball at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He played for four seasons, from 1993 to 1997. During his time there, he averaged 8.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game. He is second in Nebraska's history for career blocked shots.
In his senior year (1996–97), he averaged 11.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. He helped his team win their first basketball championship in 1996. This was the NIT title game, where he scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Playing Professional Basketball
After college, Mikki Moore was not chosen in the NBA draft. This means he was an "undrafted" player. Even so, he went on to have a long career. He played for many different teams, which is why he is sometimes called a "journeyman" player.
He played for nine different teams in the NBA. These teams included the Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, New Jersey Nets, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Clippers, Seattle SuperSonics, Sacramento Kings, and Golden State Warriors.
Mikki also played in other professional leagues in the U.S. and overseas. He played in the CBA and the NBA Development League (now called the G-League). In the NBA D-League, he played for the Roanoke Dazzle. He was even the first player picked in the 2002 NBA D-League Draft.
He had a great season in 2002–03, earning honors like the NBA D-League Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named to the All-NBA D-League First Team. In the CBA, he was on the All-Rookie Team in 1998 and the All-CBA First Team and All-Defensive Team in 1999.
Playing for the New Jersey Nets
On July 27, 2006, Mikki Moore joined the New Jersey Nets. He was traded from the Seattle SuperSonics. During this season, a key player named Nenad Krstić got a serious knee injury. This meant Moore had to play a lot more minutes.
He had one of his best years in the NBA with the Nets. He averaged 9.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. He also led the league in field goal percentage, making 60.9% of his shots. This was a big achievement, as he was the first undrafted player to lead the NBA in this statistic.
Time with the Sacramento Kings
On July 21, 2007, Moore signed a deal with the Sacramento Kings. He played for the Kings until February 19, 2009, when he was released from the team.
Short Stints with Other Teams
- On February 24, 2009, he signed with the Boston Celtics.
- On September 2, 2009, Moore joined the Golden State Warriors. He had surgery for a bone spur in his heel and was later released on January 4, 2010.
- On December 9, 2011, he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies but was released a week later.
- In January 2012, he played for the Idaho Stampede in the D-League.
- He returned to the Golden State Warriors on April 16, 2012, for the rest of that season.
- On October 1, 2012, he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers but was released nine days later.
- In November 2013, he was back in the D-League with the Idaho Stampede and then traded to the Reno Bighorns. He was released by the Bighorns in December 2013.
