Early Life and Schooling
Mile Bogović was born into a Catholic family in Croatia. His parents were Mijo and Manda Bogović. He grew up near a town called Slunj in Central Croatia.
Learning to Be a Priest
After finishing primary school in Slunj, he went to a special high school called a classical gymnasium. This school was in a seminary in Pazin, which is a place where people study to become priests.
He then went to the main seminary there and studied at the Theological Faculty at the University of Zagreb. This is where he learned about philosophy and theology, which are important subjects for priests.
Becoming a Priest and Further Studies
Mile Bogović became a priest on July 5, 1964. He worked as a priest for two years. Then, he decided to continue his studies.
From 1966 to 1971, he went to the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. There, he earned a special degree called a Doctor of Church History. This means he became an expert in the history of the Church.
Working as a Priest
After finishing his studies in Italy, Father Bogović (Fr. Bogović) took on many different roles. He worked in various parishes and helped lead the Church in his region.
Important Roles and Duties
- Parish Priest: He served as a parish priest in Krivi Put. A parish priest is in charge of a local church community.
- Chaplain: At the same time, he was a chaplain in Slunj. A chaplain often provides spiritual support to a specific group, like in a hospital or school.
- Archbishop's Assistant: He was a personal assistant to Archbishop Viktor Burić. This meant he helped the Archbishop with his daily tasks and duties.
- University Rector: He became the rector of the Theological Faculty at the University of Rijeka. A rector is like the head of a university department.
- Vicar General: He served as the Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Rijeka–Senj. This is a very important role, as the Vicar General helps the Archbishop manage the entire archdiocese.
- Professor: He also taught church history as a professor at the University of Rijeka.
Becoming a Bishop
On June 4, 1999, a very important event happened in Mile Bogović's life. Pope John Paul II, the leader of the Catholic Church, chose him to become an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Rijeka–Senj. An Auxiliary Bishop helps the main bishop of an area.
Consecration and New Diocese
On June 29, 1999, he was officially made a bishop. This special ceremony is called a consecration. It took place in the St. Vid Cathedral in Rijeka. Archbishop Anton Tamarut and other important Church leaders performed the ceremony.
Just one year later, on May 25, 2000, Bishop Bogović received an even bigger role. He became the first main bishop (Diocesan Bishop) of the newly created Gospić-Senj. This meant he was now in charge of this new church area.
Retirement and Passing
Bishop Bogović retired from his role on April 4, 2016. He retired after reaching the age of 75, which is a common retirement age for bishops.
Sadly, Bishop Bogović passed away on December 19, 2020. He died from COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Croatia.
