Milena Pavlović-Barili (also spelled Barilli; born November 5, 1909 – died March 6, 1945) was a famous Serbian painter and poet. She is known as one of the most important female artists in Serbian modern art.

Milena's Early Life and Education
Milena Pavlović-Barili was born in Požarevac, Serbia. Her father, Bruno Barilli, was an Italian composer. Her mother, Danica Pavlović-Barili, was Serbian and also had artistic talent. Danica studied art in Munich, Germany. There, she met Bruno Barilli, and they married in Požarevac.
Milena herself began her art studies early. She attended the Royal School of Arts in Belgrade, Serbia, from 1922 to 1926. After that, she continued her art education in Munich from 1926 to 1928.
Milena's Artistic Journey
In the early 1930s, Milena left Serbia to explore the art world. She traveled and lived in many European cities. These included Spain, Rome, Paris, and London. During her time there, she met famous artists and writers. She was especially influenced by artists like Giorgio de Chirico.
Milena's art was part of the surrealism movement. This art style often shows dream-like scenes and strange combinations of objects. Her paintings often featured angels, statues, and characters like Harlequins. She used veils and dream-like situations in her work.
After 1939, Milena moved to New York City in the United States. This is where her career really took off. She became a successful illustrator for popular magazines. These included Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. She also worked for a big advertising company.
In 1943, Milena's art was shown in an important exhibition. It was called Exhibition by 31 Women at the Art of This Century gallery in New York. Before she passed away, she was asked to design costumes for a ballet and a play. Sadly, she could not finish these projects. Milena died at the age of 35.
Milena's Artworks and Legacy
Milena Pavlović-Barili created many different types of art. She painted portraits and also imaginative scenes from stories. Her works are displayed in museums around the world. You can find them in Rome, New York City, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade.
Her birthplace in Požarevac has been turned into a museum. It is called the Milena Pavlović-Barili Gallery. This museum is dedicated to her life and her amazing artwork.
