John Miles Lawrence (born November 7, 1940) was an English cricketer. He played for Somerset in 18 matches. These games took place between 1959 and 1961. Miles was a right-handed batsman. He also bowled leg-spin. His father, Johnny Lawrence, was also a famous cricketer.

Who Was Miles Lawrence?

Miles Lawrence was born in Rothwell, West Yorkshire, England. His father, Johnny Lawrence, was a well-known all-rounder in cricket. An all-rounder is a player who is good at both batting and bowling. Like his dad, Miles was a right-handed batsman. He also bowled leg-spin, which is a type of bowling.

Miles's Early Cricket Days

Miles started playing for Somerset in 1959. He was only 18 years old at the time. In his very first game, he scored 33 runs. This was a good start for a young player.

In his next match, he did even better. He scored 35 runs. He also helped his team win against Nottinghamshire. Miles took three of their last four wickets. These bowling figures, three wickets for 44 runs, were his best ever.

Playing for Somerset

In 1960, Miles played five games for Somerset. He did not beat his best scores or bowling figures that year.

The next year, 1961, he played more often. He was part of the Somerset team for 10 out of their first 12 matches. During this time, he mostly played as a batsman. He bowled only a few overs and did not take any wickets.

In 18 innings, he scored 199 runs. His highest score was 41 runs. He made this score against Middlesex at Taunton. After the 1961 season, Miles left Somerset. He did not play first-class cricket again.

Life After Cricket

After leaving Somerset, Miles Lawrence went back to Yorkshire. There, he worked with his father's business. They ran indoor cricket schools. Miles also coached cricket at Leeds Grammar School.

In Yorkshire league cricket, he changed his role. He became a wicketkeeper instead of a bowler. A wicketkeeper is the player behind the stumps.

Miles Lawrence passed away in 1989. He was 48 years old. Sadly, he died just four months after his father.
