The Milford Congregational Church is a special old building located on Main and Ferry Streets in Milford, Maine. It was built a long time ago, between 1883 and 1885. This church is a great example of the Queen Anne Victorian style. It's one of the most fancy and detailed buildings in the small town of Milford. Because of its unique design and history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it's an important historical landmark!

Exploring the Church's Design

The Milford Congregational Church stands at the corner of Ferry Street and Main Street (which is also United States Route 2). It's near the edge of the town's main area. The church is made mostly of wood and is about one and a half stories tall. It has a tall, square tower at its southeast corner.

The outside of the church looks very interesting. It uses different types of wood coverings, like clapboarding (long, thin boards) and cut wood shingles (shaped wooden tiles). These styles were very popular during the Queen Anne period. A newer part of the building was added to the west side, along Ferry Street.

Unique Features of the Building

On the east side of the church, there's a big, beautiful stained-glass window. It's shaped like a round arch. The main entrance to the church is at the bottom of the tower, to the left of this window.

The tower itself has special supports called buttresses on its south side. Higher up, the tower has more half-round windows. Above these, there's a section called the belfry, which is where church bells would be. This part has two arched openings side-by-side. The very top of the tower is shaped like a pyramid.

A Look Back at the Church's History

The church group in Milford first started in 1880. At that time, a pastor from Old Town would come to lead their services. The land for the church building was bought in 1883.

Building the church took two years because of money problems. The person who designed the church is not known for sure. However, the builder was Asa T. Wing from Old Town. The beautiful stained glass windows were made by David T. Welch from Portland. It's believed that a part of the building, called the vestry, was built first. This part was used for services before the rest of the church was finished.
